Lactation Consultant

What is a lactation consultant?

International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC)  are allied health care providers that work as members of the global maternal-child health team in various settings. They work collaboratively with mothers, families, policymakers and communities to provide lactation support, promote breastfeeding, and assist in reducing the risks of not breastfeeding.

You may see other similar designations such as: Certified Lactation Counsellor (CLC), Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), Lactation Educator Counsellor (LE or LEC), Certified Breastfeeding Counsellor (CBC), and Certified Breastfeeding Educator (CBE). All of these designations are lactation educators.

International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) are the only lactation professionals that have over 90 hrs of college level courses, 1000 hrs of clinical experience, have passed the certification exam issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and are required to re-certify every 5 years. The IBLCE's mission is to create the highest standards in lactation care by monitoring the safety and ethics of practitioners.
